Thanks for this!  Which is the nearest large town?  I've tried finding them on the 1850 map posted as a link on this message board, but can't see them.

I had Hughes relatives living near Glyn Ceiriog I've found it a bit of a bitwixt & between place.  Llangollen is just to the North if you use:-

http://www.multimap.com

and search for Glyn Ceiriog you'll see it's location.

My lot were from near Pontfadog.

Genuki have a wee write up of the parish

Pam

Thanks for the links.  Interestingly, I can find no place on multi-map called Nantyr, which wrjones says is near Glyn Ceiriog.

On the other website you linked to, there is a Baptist Chapel, Capel Nantyr, and mention of Nantir Isa and Nantir Ucha (lower and higher Nantir).  There is also a Plas Nantyr on multi-map, which I assume is a large house/estate.

So now I have a choice of birthplaces for my ancestors!!  As you solve one riddle, another dozen come along!

Can anyone expand on these various placenames?

Thanks!

Hi there

Most of my dad's side of the family hails from Glyn Ceiriog. Nantyr is only a little place, and in some cases it might be a street name or house name within Glyn Ceiriog itself. Nantyr is a common word. I have an old map of 1904 which I can check tonight when I get home and let you know!

Regards

Alex

Hi, I had a look at my old map. There is Plas Nantyr which is a couple of miles to the west of Glyn Ceiriog, but be aware that there are many little places around the area, like roads and houses/farms that have Nantyr in the name.

Hope this helps!

Somewhat belated thanks for all your help!  I've been away from RootsChat doing others things, so am only just catching up.

I've located a couple of the farms around Nantyr where my ancestors lived - one is now a farm, bungalow and barn conversion - and I hope to go noseying around this summer!
