G??? - Help
« on: Friday 16 January 04 21:20 GMT (UK) »
Looking for help as to the possible surname of a marriage witness.
The name I am trying to decipher is the first witness's surname.

I have attached an image file (my first attempt). I hope it works....

It was great to examine the writing at first hand !

It looks to me as if it could be Glatz !

In a Surname Index for 1881 I found two people called Glatz in Worcestershire and Dorset.

I also searched for Glats, there were none listed.

Regards  :)

Thanks for your quick reply.

The witness names are from my GG grandparents marriage certificate dated Dec 24th 1884. They were married in Brent Knoll, Somerset.
The witness's surname doesn't appear to be related to my family, it was just my curiosity in trying to make out what her surname was.

I was interpreting it as 'Glafs' - but haven't found any other reference to the name.

It also gave me a chance to try out the 'add an attachment' system on your website. This should prove extremely useful.

I tried Glafs but there were none ! the only name starting with Glaf was Glaffey but that does not seem to fit either  ???

You were the first  8) person to try "add an attatchment"

If you think of any other spellings I can check them out but I can not search for surnames in Somerset only, I can only plot the surname by spelling.

Really like the way you've put the image on there - let's hope lots of people follow your lead!

It really looks like GLAK to me, or perhaps HAK ?

Anyhow, found lots of interesting links on handwriting and I've been going off in all directions on the internet so far, but here's a good site (there are many more, but not with many examples):

English Handwriting 1500-1700 - an online course

and:
University of Leicester - Palaeography
A very very interesting site - hover your mouse over the images, and a little window will pop up with explanations:

Hi,

I must admit it looked like Glass to me,  it used to be the convention to write a 'ss' as 'fs'  sometimes without the crossbar on the 'f'.

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/handwriting.html has an explanation.

The example below reads 'Thewliss' and looks to me like yours.

Just had a little look at FreeBMD,  there are a few Sylvia Glass in there,  b1862 Axbridge, m1885,  possibly the same one,  but worth checking out,

Hi there

Got to agree with Kazza, it looks like Glass to me - the 'ss' is written in the old style of 'fs'
Both names are in the same handwriting, so it is a copy of the certificate rather than the original where it was probably spelt in the correct way as when someone puts their signature to paper.

I would have thought "Glass" - I have seen Jesse written as Jefse, so perhaps it is the old fashioned s written as an f, if you see what I mean.
