missing police constable Snowdon
« on: Saturday 04 September 04 21:43 BST (UK) »
I am looking for any information as to the parentage and birth of Robert Dalking Snowdon.
Robert was married in August 1885 at the registry office at Easington in Durham, he states his age as 21 and his father as Thomas Snowdon deceased, his father's occupation as police constable.
Robert shows on both the 1891 census where his birthplace is shown as Scotswood Northumbria, and in the 1901 census where his birthplace is shown as Durham Stockton.  Robert would have been 6 in 1871, but I can find no trace of him before he marries.  The nearest I can find is a Robert Snowdon born to an Ann Snowdon in Morpeth workhouse in 1864, but with no father mentioned.
If this is 'my' Robert where is he between 1864 and 1885?
There are a family of 'Dalking's in the area, whether they are connected or not I have no idea.  I find it a little strange that anybody would claim to have a father who is a police constable unless they believed that statement to be true.  Can anybody help me?

   Hi Kazza,

sorry to say I have still no information re this missing person,  I now have some very nice folk connected to the police history sites who are checking it out in both Durham and  Northumberland, so if they come up with nothing then I guess that I will have to content myself with saying  " Sorry Great Grandad, but you just were not telling the truth on your wedding certificate"

glad to say that the rest of the family do seem to have stuck to the truth.

Well,

Good luck with those sites,  let us know if they come up trumps.

And RootsChatters,  anyone else have anything that might help Lindy?

I have a g'gfather at marriage
described himself as a police constable, lab on his son' birth cert but discharged from the police
several years later. Have been told by a speaker on police matters this was not unusual.

Now I've realised that I mis-read the surname my reply is even less relevant to your request. But sometimes mistakes have a funny way of working out for the good so I'll leave my message

Clincher,

You never know,  he got his middle name somewhere.  I got a good lead myself with a strange middle name.  :D
