I have a marriage certificate from 1838 that says they were both Minors. How old is that?

Under the age of 21 at that time.

They would require parental consent or court consent to marry unless in Scotland where it was 16.

under 21 and over 16 or over 18 or some other age? How long has the marriagebl age been 16? I recall that it use to be lower.

Yes over in taht perios until recently in the UK (1970's) minimum age was 16 and age of majority 21

Hi,

I heard on another list that the minimum age of marriage with parental consent was 14 for boys and 12 for girls until the 1930's. Anyone know for sure?

According to a book that I have on Marriage certificates, that is correct:
"The age at which people could marry was originally fixed at 12 for girls and 14 for boys and stayed at that until..1929 (Age of Marriage Act 1929) when it was amended to 16 for both parties.  Parental consent had to be obtained if either party was under 21 (or 18 when age of consent was lowered to 18)."
