Finding a Parish Record
« on: Wednesday 21 July 04 11:00 BST (UK) »
Before I launch into boring you with my dilemma's...well done on the RootsChat site.Throughout my brief experince I have have found all who have responded curtious and helpful..so well done  kazza, skippy, pbennett & co.
Now..
Have m/c & parish record George ROBERTS & Sarah Ann HENRY 8 October 1871 St Peter's Ashton under Lyne, page 168 (I reckon this is the correct one)

These two have 3 kids..sorry children !

Thomas Roberts b. 10 Sept 1872 reg 18 oct 1872
Elizabeth Roberts b. 18 Sept 1873 reg 11 March 1874
George Edwin Roberts b. 19 January 1876 reg 28 Feb 1876

The address for first 2 births certs is 5 Railway View,Ardwick
and 3rd b/c is 60 Armitage St,Ardwick.

All in Registration District of CHORLTON - sub/dist Ardwick,County Lancaster

The first b/c has mothers former name as HENRY (or what looks like Henry!) and the other two have her former name as HARRISON....!

George & Sarah Ann Roberts emigrated to Australia in May 1877.

How do I locate the most likely Church of Eng.parish records for children..am I right to assume it would be close to the addresses on b/c's !!!

Could it be St Matthews Church Ardwick ?? Yes it is !(found since initial posting of this message)

Hi Kimberley,

The nearest church to Armitage St, Ardwick is St Benedicts.
The records are held by Manchester City Council  - Archives (Family History).

Ardwick- St Benedict
Baptisms-1880-1911- MFPR 1212
Baptisms- 1911-2001- Archives M566
Marriages-1880-1975- MFPR 1213
Marriages- 1977-2000- Archives M566

I think you have to have exact date to obtain a copy of Parish Register -
£0.50p per copy plus postage £0.30p (GBP).

Can't help with Railway View. It may be worth requesting someone to check
through an 1881 census to see if its listed and give you surrounding street names. I may then be able to find it on a map.

regards,

Skippy

Kimberley/Skippy,

Just checked the 1881 census, Railway View in Ardwick was on the same route as Hyde Road (numbers around the 300 mark) and Garden Walks (can't see that one on a modern map) and Garibaldi Street (nor this one.)  Piece RG11/3898.  Can't help with the church, but maybe Skippy can.

Hi Nell,

Thanks for your response. Railway View isn't shown on the map although
the streets you listed are. I would never have found it so you've been a big help. Ta.

Kimberley,

It looks as though St Benedicts is still the closest church.

There is a St Matthews Church on Hyde Road but that looks to be about
5-6 hundred yards further away and a U.M. Church?? also on Hyde Road which again is further away than St Benedicts.

Hope this helps.

regards to you both

Skippy

Hi,

Just checked, St Benedict was built in 1878.

So, may be either United Methodist (Baptisms 1865 - 1937) or
St. Matthews (Baptisms 1865 - 1962).

Hi Kimberley,

St Matthews Church no longer exists but I am almost certain it was a C of E Church.

I couldn't find much on the history of the church other than:-

''History records that there have been schools in the area of the junction of Devonshire Street and Hyde Road, in Ardwick, Manchester, for more than 130 years. There was a church school housed in St. Mathew's Hall before 1870.''

and on the site 'Longsight Memories' there are a couple of references and photos of Whit Walks taken outside the church.

regards,

Skippy

Yes, I'm here, Kimberley

The number I gave was RG11/3898 which is the piece number for the 1881 census which contains the returns for Railway View.  TNA catalogue description says registration sub-district 2E Civil Parish etc Ardwick.  I thought it might help skippy if he were tracking these places down a different way.  He's obviously well-acquainted with the area - I only know how to search the 1881 CDs for this sort of thing.

Thanks Skippy

Finally found the baps at St Matthews Ardwick for Thomas Roberts b 10 Sept 1872 & his sister Elizabeth Roberts born 18 Sept 1873...both children baptised on 21 December 1873.

Finally..thanks for all your help !
The b/c for Thomas ROBERTS shows his mother Sarah Ann ROBERTS as formerly HENRY & b/c for Elizabeth ROBERTS shows mother Sarah Ann ROBERTS former name as HARRISON.

Very confusing !!
A third child George Edwin ROBERTS born 19 January 1876 at 60 Armitage Street Ardwick shows mother as Sarah Ann ROBERTS formerly HARRISON !!
Can't find his baptism yet !!

How are you on Armitage Street in Ardwick ???
